The Bedlam Bards

onthedrift.gifThe Bedlam Bards were already a hard filkin', fun lovin' Celtic group when they discovered Firefly and wrote an anthem. "The Ballad of Joss" swept through the Browncoat community like wildfire and was sung lustily (if offkey) during the entire summer of 2005 as fans thronged the advance screenings and waited impatiently for the movie premiere. The Bards followed it up with "Big Damn Trilogy," traveled around the country playing conventions and shindigs, and have since compiled their Firefly/Serenity inspired work into a new album, "On the Drift," which went on sale February 16 and sold out in minutes.

Don't worry! They've restocked (twice) and there's more coming.

What you'll get will be something that just feels like Firefly: Funny, haunting, addictive, and full of stringed instruments. You'll smile to hear the "Ballad of Joss" again (I dare you not to sing along with the chorus) but you'll laugh out loud with the theme song parody and "Big Damn Trilogy" and you'll have a wistful smile during "Leaf on the Wind." Tributes to the show's music pop up in "Saffron's Wedding Dance" and "River's Jig," and songs like "Paquin's Rendezvous" and "Eavesdown Docks" are reminiscent of some of Greg Edmondson's wonderful music that didn't make it to the soundtrack.

The Bards' version of "Hero of Canton" is the way the mudders sang around a campfire (mudfire?), and the tune seems to have inspired the delicate instrumental piece "The Rock Garden" which really should be longer than it is, just because I don't want it to end so quickly.

Finally, there are two songs that catch your attention through sheer emotion. "On the Drift" captures Mal's thoughts while trapped on a drifting Serenity, and "Sail the Sky" is for Browncoats everywhere.

Buy it at CDBaby. You might want to hurry.

You should also head to the Bedlam Bards for some free downloads (including a karoake version of "The Hero of Canton"), lyrics to all the songs, sample tracks, and more! You can also hear and download three of their songs from these MP3 postcards: "Ballad of Joss," "Big Damn Trilogy," and "Sail the Sky."

I was part of the cast of my local Renn Faire when I saw a show of the BB. They were playing Renn music, but at the end they played Sail The Sky and I proceded to geek out. While in character…

Anyways, Their music is great stuff, very much in the same vein as the music from the show. Some of the songs are funny (Ballad of Joss) and some are just plain lovely songs. I think every Browncoat should have this CD!

I have been a Browncoat since about season 3 of Buffy, I just didn't know it yet. I watched Firefly from the beginning. Sail the Sky just summarizes everything we all love about Firefly/Serenity and the heartache we feel waiting on a sequel/more about the 'Verse. I can't listen to it without getting tears in my eyes.

    Keep Flyin'
