GEEK THOUGHTS, GEEK STUFF, GEEK LIFE

I got River's stylus

Finally I can do all that homework I've been putting off all those decades. Despite my constant pimping I haven't bought much myself from The Prop Store of London — I prefer items that are identifiable as being from the movie in question, instead of generic props, and that tends to price them out of my wallet — but when this popped up within my means I had to grab it.

And I'm glad I did, this is an elegant little piece. It has a well-used wooden handle, shaped to fit the hand, with small carvings at either end, and acrylic tips for tapping away at computer screens. Just the sort of thing you'd expect to see in an Asian-influenced future. If I wasn't afraid I'd break or lose it, I'd use it for my own PDA stylus. It shipped quickly, packaged so tightly it took me nearly fifteen minutes to get it out.

The COA lists it as "River Stylus," but I don't know for sure if it's the one the actress used. I know there's at least one other, in the prop display seen at the Serenity Fan Fest last year (unless this is the same one, which seems unlikely; there's pretty much always more than one of any movie prop). But I'm happy.

Way to go! It looks like a neat, easily-identifiable prop. That would be fun if one of the points was retractable so you could act like you're gonna poke it in someone's forehead… :)

Thanks for the London Prop store tip. I am a late starter to this stuff with Serenity and Firelfy but am excited to collect and support Joss and any future projects. It has quickly become an obsession of mine!

I made a replica well close enough with off the shelf items based off your prop, can you tell me if i made it close to the movie version?

    Materials used:
    bamboo: .49 a length = approx 3 usable lengths
    clear paintbrush lenghts 2.50
    wood burning tool 9.00

that was all except superglue which I already had from a dollar store.

It looks great! The screen version has clear tips, as you know, and the handle is shaped to fit the hand better (bit wider in the middle, with slight flares on each end) but yours looks good and is miles better than anything I could do.
Sigh. I can draw, I can write, I can carry a tune, but mechanical skills were not included in my package.
    Nice job!
