Cut the tape narrow enough that it doesn't show when they are installed back into the slots. I wouldn't glue them just in case you want take it apart at some later date for storage. As I said, I didn't realize it came off until I saw a comment from someone who did it. The cardboard/wood-looking thing peels off, you have to catch the edge or corner with a fingernail and work it off. Once you get it started it peels easily enough, and the surface underneath is black and shiny. It takes some doing.
