Favorite scene? *thinks*
River dancing in 'Safe'. She's my favorite character, that's my second favorite episode and the scene with her dancing always warms my heart. She's just beautiful there.
It's hard to pick one out, but I'll go with 'War Stories'. I think that this episode more than any other, really shows insight into the personalities of all the characters. They don't dig, but there's certainly a familial aspect to the interaction. The Niska plot really puts the life they live and it's dangers centre stage, and how Mal deals with it is very telling abuot who the man is. Besides, how can you not like River showing off her 'killer woman' abilities and scaring the crap out of the perenially worried Kaylee.
Favorite scene is when Adalai Nishka gives up Wash and Mal's ear to Zoe, and upon leaving Wash tells Zoe how crazy Mal is, and Zoe's simple response is "I know".
No matter how many times life gets me down I think about that episode and think you have to be a little crazy to survive life.
Oh, scene…Boy, that's even harder. Actually, I have to with the scene in War Stories I mentioned, where River demonstrates her firearms skills on Niska's minions.
Argh! Too many choices! But to change the tone a bit from the above how about the 'Good bible' scene with Jo-Saff-Bridge and Mal? Great dialogue and such a funny outcome
Favorite scene? Like, just one? I do like Mal nekkid, waiting for a ride.
Jayne hanging under Serenity covering Mal and Zoe as they rescue River and Simon. Classic.
The shot of Mal seeing Serenity for the first time.
Shiny opportunity!
I really like the interaction of Inara and Mal in "Shindig" – that was a fun episode. He got stabbed, ya know…
Well, I am a gun enthusiast at heard (as if my weblog was not indication enough of that), so my favorite scene has to be the one of Jayne confronting Mal, while carrying Vera.
"My days of not taking you seriously are certainly coming to a middle," indeed!
For me 'The Message' has always been my favourite episode. Perhaps it's my military family status but watching Mal and Zoe's interaction with Tracey as he is dying always tugs at my gut. There's a lot of 'family' in that episode. History, shared experiences, laughter, pain and forgiveness.
"When you can't run, you crawl, and when you can't crawl – when you can't do that… you find someone to carry you."
And if that's not enough, who can resist a cunning hat?
For me it was in the pilot Serenity with the Crazy Ivan–with all the great work on the computer graphics, and when they blast out of there and everyone cheers, it's just great. Then you see the relationship that they have with the ship–Kaylee"That's my girl"
It's a great episode and they definitely should have used it as the first episode.
River: River's gone.
Jubal Early: Then who exactly are we talking to?
River: You're talking to "Serenity." And Early, "Serenity" is very unhappy.
Gotta love Objects in Space
I liked the torture scene in "War Stories" best I think. The dialogue between Mal and Wash about Zoe really cracked me up. Plus, I could tell what Mal was doing. He's such a good guy (deep down, haha).
" We gotta go to the crappy town where I'm a hero!"
Perfect line to end such an awesome song, the Hero of Canton.
Without a doubt, 'Out of Gas.' It's my favorite episode, and there are so many great scenes to choose from.
But since I gotta pick one….
Mal: "I'm staying with Serenity."
Inara: "Mal- you don't have to die alone.
Mal: "Everyone dies alone."
Says so much about each of the characters and their priorities. But again, there's so much to choose from in that episode.
Fave scene is hard. I'm sure I'll change my mind as soon as I hit "submit."
(Even as I'm typing this up, I keep changing my mind!!)
In "Our Mrs Reynolds," the scene where Mal says to Inara, "I knew you let her kiss you"! It was a scene that does what Joss does best: Give us excited hope that people are going to get together, then cruelly & humorously dash that hope on the rocks. It's a moment of delicious hopefulness AND pain. In a phrase, it's pure Joss.
I love the scene where Mal kicks the guy into the Serenity's engine.
Wow, really? I have to choose? Why can't I say them all?
Well there are so many good ones, but here I go…
I would have to say that I love that scene with Mal and Jayne in Ariel when Mal knocks out Jayne after the job. Mal knows he's betrayed him, his crew, therefore his family. He throws him in the airlock and threatens him.
Jayne: What're you takin' it so personal for? It ain't like I ratted you out to the feds!
Mal: Oh, but you did! You turn on any of my crew, you turn on me! But since that's a concept you can't seem to wrap your head around, then you got no place here. You did it to me, Jayne. And that's a fact.
You just get the strongest concept of family and that is what Browncoats are about
I personally never get tired of Mal being told he has a wife in "Our Mrs. Reynolds". It's Nathan acting at his best, such amazing facial expressions that make us fall in love with Firefly everytime!
My fav scene is in the first episode when the agent has a gun up to rivers head and he says if anyone make so much as a then Mal comes up and with a seconds hesitation shoots and kills and he doesn't miss a step.
I would have to say Bushwacked when each crew member is being interviewed by the Alliance officer. I love the variety of responses
One scene!!!!!!the entire series is made up of favorite stuff-it's all great????Loved Buffy, Loved Angel, but Firefly was amazing – so I thought of this all day-Decided I needed to rewatch(like I need a reason)some episodes-Mal in Serenity as he watches the Alliance ships coming in when the've lost-the look on his face is so-very powerful-loved the hopelessness with the peacefulness of the ships, but then I realized every episode what was I doing-singing with the opening credits-like an anthem–so for a favorite scene I would go with those-opening credits-it's perfect-says evreything you could want. And damn I wish I was in Burbank this weekend for the con!!!!!!!
Lynn Laakso
Love the show-every episode is fantastic, but I absolutely love Jaynestown when they sing the Jayne song-I can't help it but sing along-and the look on everyones faces is priceless.

All of a sudden there are dozens of people around at the ready posting comments. =P
My favorite scene is the scene on the ship at the start of "Our Mrs. Reynolds".
Favourite scene?? I have a hard time picking my favourite episode! There are scenes I love in all of the episodes; well, there aren't many that I don't love.
Given that, I think I'll go with the scene that got me hooked on "Firefly". I had the series marked to watch in the Fall Preview edition of TV Guide and enjoyed it from the beginning, even with all the weird things Fox did to it. I was hooked by the end of "Train Job", not when Mal kicked Crow into the engine as a lot of people were.
The scene that hooked me was when Mal & Zoe took the medical supplies back to town and were stopped by the Sheriff.
Sheriff: You were truthful back in town. These are tough times. Hard to find yourself work. A man can get a job, he might not look too close at what that job is.
(to Mal) But a man learns all the details of a situation like ours, well then he has a choice.
Mal: I don't believe he does.
And that was it – I was hooked.
My top two have already been mentioned, so I'll drop another one here: Very first episode -it's actually a moment of a scene- when Kaylee and Inara are going up the stairs talking and Kaylee asks how many fell madly in love with her this time. The shot is a cut back to Mal; the look on his face pains me every time. Sure, he just embarrassed and made fun of her, but it is just killing him that… well, you all know!
My favorite scene is when Jayne is offering up Vera in a trade for Saffron. When I saw it the first time the only thing I could think of was "Holy crap, Jayne is really going to shoot him!!!". Yea, definitely my favorite scene!
Aw, trying to pick one favorite scene is hard, so I'll add one of the first that comes to mind: in War Stories, when Zoe and Jayne have arrived at Niska's torture chamber to free Mal and they find him battling Niska's thug. Zoe tells Jayne to lower his weapon because "this is something the Captain has to do himself". We then hear Mal's plaintive voice from offscreen: "No! No it's not!". "Oh", says Zoe, and she and Jayne then open fire. Classic Whedon turnaround.
So hard to choose a favorite…. I'm gonna go with the episode "Jaynestown" (always puts me in a good mood) and the scene where you see the crew's reaction to the mudder singing "The Hero of Canton"
Is the US/Canada restriction only about Region encoding, or is there a shipping issue as well?
I'm going to enter anyway – too enticing a question to avoid. Although _really_ hard to answer.
I think I'm going to have to go for the scene in Out of Gas after they all leave where Mal walks slowly through the ship, closing all the doors, and then grabs a blanket from the locker, wraps it around himself, and settles into the pilots chair. Not a word is spoken, and the music is simple, but it's a fantastically poignant piece of acting and cinematography.
One scene is tough. I'll have to say Jaynestown, when the crew stops dead in their tracks to fully take in and appreciate the statue of Jayne.
Kaylee: "Every where I go, his eyes keep following me".
I always liked Mal's conversation with Saffron in the engine room. "If anyone ever tries to kill you, well you – you just kill 'em right back!" We started to see a lot of Mal that no one ever got to see, and it was funny.
Having to pick a single scene is worse than being tortured by Niska!
But being forced to choose I will randomly pick the Barker's Booth scene from The Message. I have a hard time not laughing when Wash enters.
Wash: Oh my God, it's grotesque! Oh, and there's something in a jar.
Just one?! Jeez.
While the "Mal Shot First" moment established the show for me, the scene I'm choosing really transcends this show.
The last scene of Jaynestown with Jayne and Mal on the catwalk kills me. Not only seeing Jayne so torn up by the events that transpired, but seeing Firefly allow a potentially one-dimensional horny, bloodthirsty, dimwitted brute to express sadness for a reasons he can't even put into words, or fully comprehend, is awe-inspiring. Characters like Jayne don't do that, "like" being the operative word. Jayne is a unique sort of toughguy, and Firefly is a unique sort of show. Unique amongst the plethora of sci-fi westerns, you know…
God damn, I hate Fox.
I like the scene where simon says, " I'm not really good at talking to girls." and Zoe replies,"is there someone you are good at talking too?", it just makes me laugh.
Hard to pick just one scene, everything is solid gold to me!
But, I do really like to watch Simon wondering what it feels like to go mad…
Simon: "This is what going mad feels like."
Simon: "This must be what going mad feels like."
Simon: "No, this must be what going mad feels like."
My fave scene is in Jaynestown when Simon is in complete denial about the situation
"So this is what it feels like to go mad."
……and Wash wants to go to the planet where HE is the hero.
Mal and Inara and the cows. Is there any other scene that says more about the series than that one? The ruffian thief, the civilized beauty, and a herd of cattle from the border planets. Wow. Deep.
My favorite scene has to be the scene between Jubal Early and Kaylee in the engine room in "Objects in Space". It's an uncomfortable scene of raw emotion, but Jewel Staite plays the part so convincingly. It's one of the more powerful scenes in a show full of powerful scenes.
Ariel – when Mal has Jayne in the air lock and is ready to let him get sucked out into the atmo for betraying River and Simon to the alliance. For some reason, this whole scene resonates with me. It's about loyalty, betrayal, and the consequences of betrayal in Mal's eyes. I love how Jayne is worried what the crew will think of him once they learn what he did and how this concern is what saves him. This scene has alot of depth and nuance to it. I took my online 'verse name – keelhauler – from this scene. At one point Mal says: "Heard tell they used to keelhual traitors back in the day." Mal is a keelhauler (or would have been if not for Jayne's reaction).
Anyway, that's my favorite scene.
Keep flyin' everybody!
One of my favorite scenes (too hard to commit to just one!) comes out shindig, when Badger sees River coming, and asks her "What's your story, luv?" The exchange that ensues, and the looks on the faces of the crew, always makes me laugh.
The ending of "The Train Job" was classic Mal.
Mal
Now this is all the money Niska gave us in advance. You give it back to him, tell him the job didn't work out. We're not thieves — well, we are thieves,
but — the point is, we're not taking what's his. We'll stay out of his way as best we can from here on in. You'll explain that's best for everyone, okay?
Crow
Keep the money. Use it to buy a funeral. It doesn't matter where
you go, how far you fly — I will hunt you down and the last thing
you see will be my blade.
Mal
Darn.
Mal kicks Crow back where he is instantly SUCKED into the engine of the ship. He starts his speech up again to the next guy, but is immediately cut off…
Other Guy
Oh I get it. I'm good. Best foreveryone, I'm right there with you.
Thanks for the great contest and GREAT prize!
Oh Man,,,,,, one scene! I would have to say Shindig when Kaylee is dreaming about the fru fru dress outside the shop window. Especially the lines "I Can Hurt You" and "It'd Be Like A Sheep Walkin On It's Hind Legs".
jim
This is one of many favorite scenes, one that always makes me laugh and bounce. In "Jayne's Town", when they first see the statue of Jayne, Kaylee states how his eyes follow her wherever she goes. In the next scene you see Mal in the background swaying side to side, watching statue Jayne's eyes…so funny!
My fave scene is from the first aired episode, The Train Job. It's the part where Mal kicks Niska's henchman into Serenity's engine. It's the scene that really hooked me into the show. I watched it's original airing, and up to that point in the episode, I was trying to figure out what kind of show this was, and why should I care. The structure was really odd for a first episode (damn you Fox!), so I was having to spend time really just wrapping my head around it. When Mal gives Crow the speech about taking the money back, I'm thinkin', ok, here we go, cookie cutter plot, enter the declaration of eternal hatred, and a re-curing nemesis is born. That was, up until he kicks him into the engine. Sweeet!!! At that point I knew the show was going to go places of its own accord, and it did!
My favorite scene has to be in the the encounter on Whitefall. The scene where Mal tossed the cargo sample to Patience -the camera does a closeup of Mal's holster but we see nothing else of him, in a classic western shot – does an amazing job of letting audiences know what they are in for. Unfortunately for fans and for the series, no one got to see that scene until much later into the original airings, but it remains my favorite of the series.
This is a really, really though decision, but my favourite scene has to be the one in "Out of Gas" when Mal is remembering when he and Zoe met Jayne. Jayne and two other thugs are holding Mal and Zoe at gunpoint. At the end of the scene Jayne shots one of the other thugs in the foot and joins Mal's crew. That scene was just so funny, I couldn't stop laughing.
One of my scenes is in the original Pilot, Serenity. Even though we saw this last, it was like seeing the whole series begin again. It gave you the inkling of what a ride we were about to take with Malcolm Reynolds and his crew. The scene is Mal asking Jayne why he didn't turn on him, and Jayne's reply that the money wasn't good enough. When Mal asks him what happens when it is, Jayne's body language, eyes and smirk tells us we need, but he throws in a great delivery of "Well… that'll be an interesting day.
For me, my 'most' favourite scene is from 'War Stories' and the uncomfortable fake-getting together scene with Mal & Zoe in front of Wash and his 'Wife soup' and with remarks from Jayne "something 'bout that is down right unsettling" & "hey, free soup" – cracks me up with laughter everytime, just so typical of those characters
[time about 39'10" into episode]
