An afternoon… and evening… with Kevin Smith

The man can talk.

I mean, he writes and directs great, quirky, vulgar movies ("Clerks," "Chasing Amy," "Dogma") and he writes comics and isn't a half-bad actor, but mostly what Kevin Smith does best is talk about himself, his work, his friends, his experiences, pop culture, and everyone and everything around him. I've seen him talk before, so I thought I was prepared when I went to "An Afternoon with Kevin Smith" at the Orange County Convention Center Saturday in Orlando. "Ha!" I thought to myself. "I can go and take notes and then blog about it in an amusing fashion! '2:30: Smith walks out. 2:31: First genitalia reference. Drink! Drink! 2:34: abuses questioner to the delight of all, etc.'"

The event, hosted by Florida Future Filmmakers, featured a screening of "Clerks 10th Anniversary," some interview clips, and promised he would do a Q&A from 2 till 4, with the warning that he usually went long.

He talked for over 6 hours.

Aside from one 15 minute break so the sponsors could do a raffle he went nonstop, taking questions and telling tales until nearly 9 pm, after a third of the 4,000 people attending had been forced to leave, presumably for pressing engagements or bloodflow issues.

You may photo op the bride

Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today before the eyes of God and in the presence of loved ones, MTV, and the weasely guy hiding under the cake table with the camera, to witness the joining together of Pamela Anderson and Kid Rock in the bonds of holy matrimony. Again.

For, as you know, they descended into wedded bliss once already in a yacht off St. Tropez last Saturday, the long awaited culmination of their on-again, off-again engagement and the beginning of their new life together. But, in as much as this hard-rocking couple has expressed their undying love for each other, as well as their desire to proclaim this love with additional ceremonies in Malibu, Nashville, and Detroit over the next month, with likely press coverage and star-studded parties each time, we honor their commitment.

Should there be anyone who has cause why this couple should not be united in marriage this time, please speak now or leak it to Defamer.com after the ceremony.

That guy, dead at 57

That creepy guy died last weekend. You know, the guy with the face like a depressed basset hound who starred in one of your favorite movies or TV shows of all time?

I really don't need to get much more specific than that because Vincent Schiavelli, who died of lung cancer, showed up in pretty much everything — although "starred" would be the wrong word. Except for one cooking show, Schiavelli never headlined anything you were likely to see.

Instead he excelled as the oddball, the maniac, the mental patient, the foreign spy. Whenever there was a bit part that required a baleful, hangdog expression and a look that made you nervously check the exits, Schiavelli was there.

I'm Twittering!
  • Only leaves a couple thousand around the place…
  • Been gradually replacing beloved books with ebooks. Shelves now (mostly) books w/emotional ties, autographs, or books unavailable as e.
  • Which means 2 shelves gone for that, 2 shelves for movies, and a lot of books without a home on an already heaped space.
  • I’ve carried the same 13’x9’ bookshelf I built almost 30 years ago from place to place, reworking it as necessary. Just added the TV.
