Help! Which swim trunks should I buy? (public safety question)
We're about to go rejoin the Y in the hopes that putting ourselves in the proximity of lots of exercise machines and a pool will somehow frighten our bodies into toughening up. Problem: there's a pool.
Which is good, because Teres and I both love to swim and it's good for you. But I haven't bought of pair of swim trunks for many fashion cycles now – jean shorts, which aren't allowed at our Y — have served me well for decades now, and I'm at a loss. What to buy?
Last time, years back, the style was for fairly short shorts that now, compared to the usual knee-length versions I see around me, make me look like a pervert who's temporarily misplaced his trenchcoat, and this is not the image I wish to portray (we'll leave the accuracy of it alone for a moment). But should I get the knee-length ones?
According to eHow.com, hell no:
Pass on the board shorts if you are big in the belly. These have a tendency to hang low under the gut emphasing it more than you want.
As I resemble an albino manatee, they recommend something called "volley" shorts, in dark colors, no stripes, all cotton, possibly with warning buoys to ward off speeding motorboats.
Personally I kinda like the old-fashioned look (see above), but only if I can find a straw hat to go with it. What do you think? What should a fat man wear to the pool?

Dress like a warrior woman
Over at the Prop Store, Zoe seems to be going through her closet.
A costume worn by Zoe (Gina Torres) in the sci-fi adventure Serenity. This fantastic costume was worn by Zoe in scenes at the very end of the film. It consists of a pair of brown trousers and an pink coloured long sleeved top with poppers that fasten under the crotch. No sizes marked.
You can tell it's for Zoe cuz her name is written inside the collar. I'm guessing Wash did that, to avoid mishaps.
Curse your inevitable… T-shirt
Adam Levermore of Black Market Beagles fame has hooked up with QMx to make many fine products including the Serenity Travel Maps, the Little Damn Heroes maquette series, and now a line of "Discreet Geek" shirts. Which brings us to this:
Hoban Washburne, or Wash as he's known to his friends, he of the dinosaur passion play set. This t-shirt commemorates that passion play with one of Serenity's pilot's most memorable lines.
The Inevitable Betrayal T-shirt is an original design from Black Market Beagle's Adam Levermore, and is part of BMB's "Discreet Geek" line of cool and fashionable shirts, stickers and other items of geeky goodness. It comes on a chocolate brown-colored 6.1 ounce, 100-percent cotton Gildan t-shirt, offering the same high quality QMx t-shirts have become famous for. It is available in men's sizes small to 3XL. And now, for the first time, Inevitable Betrayal is available in women's babydoll t-shirts, sizes small to 2XL. (Note: all shirt sizes are available while supplies last.)
So get your Inevitable Betrayal t-shirt and let them know you saw it coming.
Fruity Oaty Bar madness!

See, I step away for a few minutes and you guys go nuts with new stuff. QMx released this stunning signed lithograph of the Fruity Oaty Bar ad, by original designer Geoffrey Mandel.
The Fruity Oaty Bar artwork created by Serenity Designer Geoffrey Mandel was the basis for the most memorable power bar commercial in movie history. With it's vibrant colors and anime-style characters (and subliminal message implanted by the Operative), the Fruity Oaty Bar ad triggered River's Alliance programming, after which much ass-kicking ensued.
Although this ad was original planned to turn into a billboard, it never actually made it on film due to budgetary constraints. So, with the exception of the commercial it inspired, fans never got to see it. And we just didn't think that was right.
That's why we arranged with Universal Studios and Mr. Mandel to take the original high-resolution Fruity Oaty ad and print it in all it's glory as a limited-edition, extra-large collectible lithograph, only 1,000 in the edition. Measuring a huge 24" x 36" (61cm x 91.5cm), the Serenity Fruity Oaty Bar Lithograph is printed on 100-pound, satin-finish paper and is hand-signed and numbered by Mr. Mandel himself, for just $39.95.
Head to QMx for more of the story behind it, and to order one from them or from TFAW.com for $39.95.

Meanwhile, TFAW has all your Fruity Oaty Bar needs covered (apart from actual Fruity Oaty Bars). Shirts, ladies shirts, hoodies, and the ever-popular lunchboxes are waiting for you!

New stuff at the Creation store – ship shirt, Blue Sun glassware

I dunno how Creation Entertainment seems to get this stuff before anyone else – often months before it shows up in retail stores – but they do, and they did again. Now at their store, just in time for this year's Salute to Firefly and Serenity, are more cool new stuff.
There's a nicely done Serenity ship shirt that's sure to turn some heads, a Blue Sun shot glass (for when you're not yet drunk enough to drink from the bottle), and a Blue Sun frosted shooter (for when you almost are). Head to the Creation store to check them out, as well as lots of stuff (and autographed pictures!) from previous cons.
And don't miss the con itself, which features Jewel Staite, Ron Glass, Adam Baldwin, Summer Glau, and a very rare appearance by Gina Torres. Plus you get entertainment from our own Sing a Song of Saffron contest winner, Marian Call. It doesn't get any better than that, legally. Nov. 22-23, in Burbank, CA.
Jayne hoodies now at ThinkGeek
I understand, you really, really wanted one of AbbyShot's amazing Jayne hoodies but you're fiercely loyal to ThinkGeek and purchase for yourself only what xcan be found within its many, many pages.
Well, worry no longer! Now you can buy the Jayne hoodie at the very same place you get your LED toys and your rubber duck flash drives.
When you're on the edge of the 'verse, you need a comfy hoodie to keep you warm on your travels. Now we know that anyone who's a Jayne fan already has The Hat. So we picked up this cunning variation from a trader in one of the mining colonies. (Don't worry. We checked the shipment to be sure it was free from Bowden's Malady and also from the Alliance's imprint.)
This full-zip red sweatshirt features ribbed cuffs and bottom and a drawstring neck. The hood has the signature yellow and orange stripes in the appropriate spots and the pom-pom of Jayne's hat. The hoodie design doesn't really lend itself to earflaps, so they're represented by the red bottom stripe on the hood that bleeds down to fill the red body of the hoodie. The pockets on the front allow for smuggling of black market beagles (puppies, preferably). The left shoulder includes the design of of Jayne's dragon tattoo outlined in black, as if you've gone for your first sitting but haven't accrued enough credits to get it filled in yet.
Note: The pom-pom on the hoodie is attached with a safety pin; this is intentional. Some customers do not want to wear the pom-pom all the time. Also, when washing the hoodie we recommend that customers remove the pom-pom. Of course, customers can attach the pom-pom permanently if they so desire. We here at ThinkGeek recommend a small (but strong) magnet for semi-permanent installation.
Some of the sizes aren't in stock yet but they're coming soon. Think Geek! Some of us do little else.
Edited to add the link, now slinking away blushing…
Own the original Jayne hat
Stop paying attention for a few days and look what happens… One of the choicest bits of Serenity Stuff ever goes on sale, and for a good cause, to boot. Or, more accurate, to hat.
The original, screen-used, Adam-Baldwin-wearing Jayne hat is up for auction thanks to the man himself and the California Browncoats. Proceeds go toward the Marine Corp – Law Enforcement Foundation to "encourage the spiritual, moral, intellectual and physical development of children through education." This is a group that Adam has supported for some time now.
And your cash will go straight to 'em. Per the Cali Browncoats:
95% of the proceeds of this auction will go to MC-LEF. The remaining 5% will go toward covering some of the eBay and Paypal fees. The California Browncoats will pay any remaining fees in addition to donating their services in carrying out these auctions. If there is any of the 5% left over after fees, we will donate it to MC-LEF.
So don't miss out on your chance to own possibly the most iconic prop in the whole damn 'verse. Plus you'll look incredibly cunning, guaranteed.
