Steven Brust's Firefly novel now online

stevenbrust.jpgBack when Serenity came out, there was a deal with Pocket Books to release two original Serenity novels. Quite a few authors jumped at the chance and submitted proposals such as Keith R.A. DeCandido (author of the Serenity novelization) and Jamie Chambers and Margaret Weis (creators of the Serenity RPG). Those submissions went into a holding pattern due to Serenity's lackluster box office and finally sat waiting for Joss's approval. It was never forthcoming, and the whole idea died.

Steven Brust's submission, however, was in the form of an entire, completed novel, and it would be a shame not to do something with it…

Brust, author of the popular Dragaeran Series, “Cowboy Feng’s Space Bar and Grille,” and many others, wrote the 55,000-word book because, as he said, ”I couldn’t help myself” and this was the only way he'd get to read one. Since finishing it he has been reading the first chapter at conventions to riotous reactions and now, as promised, after exhausting every possible way of publishing it, he's posted it online as fanfic.

Steven Brust still planning Firefly novel

Steven Brust, author of the popular Dragaeran Series, “Cowboy Feng’s Space Bar and Grille,” and many others, is still planning on releasing his already-written Firefly novel one way or another. From his LJ post:

In other news, I'm finishing up a last polish on the Firefly novel, after which I'll send it to my agent, and, presumably, some time after that I'll figure out how to publish it as fanfic.  Those who know, hang on to your information for a little while.

Having heard the first chapter, I'm… well, we'll go with "eager" because "pathetically happy, with a bit of drool", accurate though it may be, doesn't sound as good.

When the Devil Drives, Chapter Three

My ongoing post-Serenity novel.

Chapter Three – The Man Who Fought Back

It began slowly. Stories like that always do.

When the riot was going on and blood was being spilled no one stopped and pondered over who did what first. Fists were flying, buildings were burning, the cursed soldiers were easy targets everywhere you looked, there were plenty of weapons in the form of bricks and lumber and dad’s old rifle, who had time to chat?

When the Devil Drives, Chapter Two

The next installment of my post-Serenity novel.

Chapter Two – Dinner Belle

“What do you think, Zoe,” Mal asked. “Should we just surrender now? Or go out with guns blazing?”

“I’m not the blazing type, sir,” Zoe replied.

When the Devil Drives, Chapter One

Hey, if I can't pimp my own stuff on my own site, where can I pimp it?

This, if all goes well, will be a Serenity novel. It will, in fact, be the one I plotted out before I got sidetracked by my "Visit to a Weird 'Verse, Re-revisited" idea, but I'm all better now.

This takes place immediately after the BDM. Rated PG-13 for adult situations and language, no explicitness unless things get out of hand. Comments welcome.

When the Devil Drives, Chapter Two

Chapter two of my Serenity post-BDM fanfic is now up at serenitymovie.org and fanfiction.net.

An excerpt:

“Damn straight.” Jayne stuck out his leg and planted his foot on top of the counter directly in front of Simon’s face. “Got kind of a cheese-ish texture, don’t it?” Simon spun around, gasping for breath and quickly turning the same color as the offending gunk. “One of them soft, oozy cheeses, like broo,” Jayne said happily.

“That’s brie,” Simon said, coughing. He lunged at his shelves and thrust a small bottle into Jayne’s hands. “Here. Rub this between your toes, coat it on thick, leave it on. Do it every day until this runs out.”

“Instead of washing?”

After you clean your feet. Both of them. Every day.”

Jayne scowled. “I might have to get me a second opinion on that."

Steven Brust reads him some Firefly at Oasis 19

stevenbrust.jpgAs you may or may not know — and how could you not? — when Pocket Books announced last year they would be publishing two original Serenity novels a number of authors jumped at the chance and submitted their proposals. Keith R.A. DeCandido (author of the Serenity novelization) was one, and Jamie Chambers and Margaret Weis (creators of the Serenity RPG) put in another. Those submissions and others are still in a holding pattern with Pocket Books and Joss, for whatever reason, and the longer the delay the less chance we'll ever get to read any new Serenity novels.

Except for one: Steven Brust's, because he went and wrote his already and plans to get it out to the public one way or another.

Visit to a Weird 'Verse, Re-revisited – Chapter Six

Just posted the last chapter of my Nathan-Fillion-in-space fanfic. It had to end some time, folks…

Read it at FanFiction.net, FireflyFans.net, or SerenityMovie.org.

Visit to a Weird 'Verse Revisited, Chapter Five

If you're following my fanfic — and of course you are — a new chapter has just been posted. Nathan's trial is over and he's been sentenced to a fate worse than death. Oh, and death.

Check it out at FanFiction.net, FireflyFans.net, or SerenityMovie.org.

Fanfic: "Abduction of Subject R. Tam"

I'm happy. The Serenity movie site just had a contest to win props from the movie; 1st prize was a complete Alliance uniform, runner-up prizes were chopsticks used in the movie. The assignment was to write a report from the point of view of an Alliance officer on the day River Tam escaped from the Academy, with a limit of 10,000 characters.

Here's my runner-up-winning entry: Read the rest of this entry »
