Jason Palmer's original Firefly painting is for sale
Now you can buy Jason Palmer's classic Firefly painting — the original, not a print — through his newly revamped website. This is his first Firefly work, the one that got such a reaction he decided to go after the official license: "…I did a pencil piece for Firefly that you see here, and it was really popular. Joss loved it, Nathan loved it, every… the whole cast really liked it. I kept getting requests about it so I worked it up into a full-fledged painting and it got very popular…" (from the SerenityStuff interview)
From the description: Acrylics on board; artwork size is 18×28. Framing: "Old World" wood with bronze and golden highlights frame 24×36, UV protectant scratch-resistant Tru-Vue acrylite, conservation acid-free matting in Moorman Leather, and acid-free backing. Artwork is "floated" inside the frame, for a sense of dimension and depth. UPS Ground shipping (continental U.S.) is included. (Contact them for international shipping)
It ain't cheap — $2500 — but it is a gorgeous work that deserves a loving home. There are also a few other Serenity pieces in his original section but they're not linked, meaning either it's still being updated or someone already bought 'em…
And a bit of news about the Serenity crew portraits: he's working on a book to showcase them in.
We are also developing a collector's book to store the prints in. The book cover is made of aluminum, with Serenity logo laser etched onto it. In addition to the character prints, the book will contain extra bonus items. We are hoping to unveil the book at the San Diego Comic con this year, so please visit our booth to check it out.
Can't wait to see the complete set! Go check out the rest of his Firefly and Serenity paintings, as well as his wonderful works for Star Wars, Heroes, Battlestar Galactica, and many more.

Interview: Jason Palmer

You know his work. You love his work. And that's because artist Jason Palmer truly loves Firefly. He's been illustrating professionally for over 15 years now, creating images and prop designs and comic book covers and trading cards and DVD covers and more for a variety of licenses such as Star Trek, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Without a Trace, Happy Feet, and Harry Potter. But his licensed illustrations of the crew of the Serenity are a labor of love that have endeared him to the Browncoat community, and he continues to create more. Currently he's making portraits of each crew member, available separately or as a set (see the end of the interview for more details).
I caught up to him at the FX Con in Orlando this year (pictured with his wife Yelena) to finally get the interview we agreed on at the last FX con. It was worth the wait.
SS: Jason, how did you get started doing licensed artwork?
JP: Well, as far as Serenity and Firefly goes, originally, at the promotional convention for the Firefly DVD, I did a piece just on my own, I thought I should do something to key in on this. So I did a pencil piece for Firefly that you see here, and it was really popular. Joss loved it, Nathan loved it, every… the whole cast really liked it. I kept getting requests about it so I worked it up into a full-fledged painting and it got very popular so I thought, let’s go ahead and get the license, so that’s what we did.
SS: You were already a fan?
JP: Oh, big time, yeah. I actually saw “The Train Job” when it first aired and thought “Wow, this is different, this is very cool.” I was a little leery because there had been so many sci-fi disappointments and things that were just kind of hackneyed but I could tell this looked different. I was a little confused because of the showing out of order–

Jason Palmer's limited edition River print
Jason Palmer, the artist creating licensed artwork of the BDHs, is beginning a cast series and the first one is now available: River.
This is the Serenity River, in a blue dress and armed. And it's fantastic.
This edition will be limited to 300 Giclee prints and 100 fine art canvas prints, signed and numbered by the artist. Copies of each one will be presented to the cast member, which is just cool. You'd better start saving now since Palmer plans to release the entire cast by the end of the year.

Jason Palmer Illustration

Jason Palmer loves Firefly. You can tell. He takes such care to capture the personalities of the characters and it gives his stunning illustrations a comfortable sense, a feeling that he "gets" them the same way you do. I understand Joss Whedon has one of the "Firefly" prints hanging in his office, and I don't blame him. I've got one over my desk and I see new details every time I look at it.

Palmer has completed several limited-edition licensed art prints and you can get them through SerenityPrint.com , or by hunting him down at conventions. Above left: "Shindig," one of a planned series of prints for each episode. Center: "Mal and Inara." Above right: "River," one of a series of cast pictures. Right: the cover for the 2006 FX Convention in Orlando.
One thing: if you order from him make sure you also order the double mats (if they're not included) to size them for standard frames. It'll make your life easier, and he's chosen the colors to complement the artwork.
He also creates licensed artwork for shows and movies outside the 'Verse, for those who are interested in such things. You can see more of his work at jasonpalmer.net.
