An Alliance uniform cap, maybe

props_alliancecapNew, at the Prop Store of London: an Alliance uniform cap. But the description puzzles me:

A purple cap with a triangular patch on the front made for the sci-fi action film Serenity. The cap is similar to the version worn by the Alliance soldiers onboard the Operatives ship when it is attacked by the Reavers. One size fits most.

"Similar to"? Is it an actual costume prop or a replica? The price ($59) suggests it's a real costume prop — too pricey for a home-made or licensed replica, I would think — but maybe one that never saw screen time, which would cost much more.  And it's listed under Props, instead of Replicas. The Prop Store is usually better about such distinctions. Maybe they couldn't conclusively identify where it was used, so declined to say either way?

Whichever it is, it's a nice looking cap for your purple-belly friends.

Firefly DVD on sale at Best Buy for 13 bucks

dvd-fireflyFor the next two weeks (until Nov. 14) Best Buy has the Firefly DVD set on sale for $12.99. Doesn't get much cheaper than this, and you won't find a better return on your investment. For less than a buck an episode, you can get some of the best entertainment ever put on TV.

More to the point, you almost certainly already have a copy if you're reading my site but now it's cheap enough for you to buy another copy or two to give out as presents or just loan to friends and coworkers.

Or if you're like me, it's time to buy a replacement copy for the one you've already been loaning out that's getting a little ragged.

Don't know yet if the prices are the same in the regional stores — anyone? — but this is one of the best deals ever for this set. And I understand some minor gift-giving holiday is coming up soon…

Inara's shuttle model (not the cheap one)

props_inarashuttleThe Inara Shuttle ornament from Dark Horse is seriously cool and great for your desk, shelf or Christmas tree, but if you really want an authentic model there's only one place to go (besides Joss' house): The Prop Store of London.

This is a model of Inara's (Morena Baccarin) shuttle from the 2005 science fiction movie Serenity. [...] This model has been scratch built from resin and styrene, and crafted with incredible detail: painted silver with small, colored accents; doors, windows, and valves etched into the model; and the words "Firefly Class Shuttle" written on the side. There were three of these shuttle models created for the production, but this one was not used. The model measures about 19" x 8.5" (48cm x 21.5cm) and is in excellent condition. This item is presented in a custom-fabricated acrylic display case, with a laser-cut mat featuring the film title and movie images.

Granted, it is a bit more expensive than the ornament — by about $4,470 — but it's a beautiful piece of the show and I hope if you buy it, you'll let me look at it and sigh wistfully.

Can't afford River's axe? This "Fantasy Axe" is suspiciously close

riversaxereplica

The official, licensed, Museums Replicas versions of River's axe and a Reaver sword were certainly impressive, reasonably accurate, and came with a cool wall plaque, but they weren't exactly cheap. And the actual props from the Prop Store of London were even more expensive.  What's the economically disadvantaged fan to do?

Never fear! Bud K is selling the "Serenity Axe" and "Serenity Fantasy Sword" for just $27.99 each! OK, they're not exactly like the movie versions — slightly different shapes to the blades — but they're not bad and definitely closer to my personal price range. And I like how the description tells you that "Dedicated fans and hardcore followers of cult sci-fi hits will instantly recognize this replica weapon" without actually mentioning River or Reavers.

The axe measures measures 27" overall and features an "authentically detailed" stainless steel 19 1/2" axe blade and wood handle. The sword is 16" overall with a stainless steel 11" blade and wood handle. Both come with nylon sheaths.  Great for your wall or your cosplaying, easy on the wallet.

Out on CD: The Browncoats' "Space Age Loser"

TBCCD01Turns out that in the future, we're not limited to just guitar, fiddle, and whatever else was playing in the background. The future will also include punk rock.

Rock and roll, mudder's milk and shindigs. The Browncoats is a rock group that wallows in singing about outer space, flying miscellaneous aircraft, and places and people that just do not exist… yet.

They've had great success with their raucous version of "The Hero of Canton" (see video above) and now they have a whole CD to abuse people with. Captain Paul Moerke, Air Marshall Bailey and Co-Pilot Gary Miller use guitars, drums, cigarettes, and lots and lots of beer to produce hard rockin' mudder goodness.

Register at their website to get a free copy of the CD's title song "Space Age Loser," buy a few tracks from Amazon or iTunes, go check out their upcoming performance at Dragon*Con, or stop out their MySpace page for more videos like this one with SNL actor Bill Chott, "Make Mudder Milkshakes" (not for the squeamish).

Serenity RPG "Big Damn Heroes Handbook" coming soon

rpg_bdhhandbookThe latest expansion to the award-winning Serenity role-playing game is coming soon.

For fans of Joss Whedon’s Serenity, the long-awaited Big Damn Heroes Handbook sourcebook, by Cam Banks, will be released this fall. (We’ll post an exact release date soon!) Everything a big damn hero needs to be a big damn hero, including stats for both minor and major nefarious villains, is in this book, along with rules for spaceship-to-spaceship combat, descriptions of Chinese communities, and new ideas for running Assets and Complications. (And, of course, more ways for your big damn hero to cuss in Chinese!)

TFAW says it's coming October 28, Amazon thinks it'll be out December 31. But all of Margaret Weis Productions' materials have been well done with plenty of info presented in a very stylistic manner, and I've no doubt this will be a worthy addition to your fantasizin'. Eitehr way, order early for a better price.

Win an Inara's Shuttle diorama from QMx

qmx_inarashuttle

Tell QMx what Serenity means to you – in words, verse, artwork, whatever – and you may win nifty prizes up to an Inara's Shuttle diorama.

The shuttle diorama features one of the 2.5-inch, hand-painted Serenity shuttles from the Big Damn Replica, hovering over it’s own little landing platform with the words “Serenity” and “Inara’s Shuttle” laser cut into its surface. Only 10 of these have been made and one of them already went to Jane Espenson (which only seems fitting as the shuttle diorama was originally her idea.)

Or you can follow QMx on Twitter; they'll be pulling a random follower to win another shuttle diorama. Or you can impress them with how well you encouraged other people to follow them and win another diorama.

Entries should be sent to admin@fireflyshipworks.com by Sept. 15, 2009, winners will be announced Oct. 15. Click here for more details.

Dress like the Operative. Again.

props_operativeoutfitNew at the Prop Store of London, the Operative's outfit.

A costume worn by The Operative in the sci-fi adventure Serenity. This excellent costume was worn by The Operative (Chiwetel Ejiofor) in scenes near the end of the film on Mr Universe’s planet where he tries to stop Mal broadcasting the message. It consists of a pair of black trousers, a black top, chest armour which is made from rubber sprayed a dark bronze colour, a thick leather belt and gauntlets, which are also the same colour as the chest armour, a pair of black boots (size 9) and a leather sheath that is strapped on to his back and has the handle of his sword sticking out of the top. The sword handle has been glued into the sheath and so can’t be removed, it is made from hard rubber and some of the silver paint has flaked off in places.

I'm almost certain I've listed this before, but this set is listed as having been worn by the actor onscreen, which makes this a bigger deal. Buy it and use it to freak out Nathan Fillion at the next con!

Buy the thing that Serenity crashed into

props_hangermodelRemember in Serenity when it spiralled down through the massive air battle, whoosh! and dodged all the other ships, zing bwow! and then got hit with the EMT thingies zap! and Wash barely managed to control it well enough to slide it into a big hanger where it got all bashed up, smash crunch!?

This is one of the things in the hanger that it hit.

This is a hanger vehicle miniature model from the 2005 sci-fi adventure movie Serenity. When the crew is being chased by Reavers they must crash land or “glide” the ship into the hanger after they were hit by enemy fire. The Firefly ship lands in the hanger knocking out scaffolding and comes to a screeching halt next to this all terrain vehicle. The miniature is 9” long made of plastic model with 5 wheels and bound together with screws. This miniature vehicle is in good condition.
