New from Joss: Doctor Horrible's Sing Along Blog

During the writers' strike, Joss Whedon had some free time. And he's not a man to laze about, really, and here was this whole big Internet needing content…

Posted at Whedonesque:

So…..

The bag is catless.

During the strike I started writing a musical intended as a limited internet series, 3 episodes of approximately 10 minutes each. Writing with me was my brother Jed, his fiancee Maurissa, and my other brother Zack. To my shock and surprise, we finished it. To my greater shock and surprise, we managed (with the help of many people I'll be praising at length soon) to drag it into preproduction (yes, just as DOLLHOUSE was given a start date two months away and all my comics were due.) And today, after a grueling week of writing everything ever while trying to be a producer, I got to start shooting. A musical.

This much I will say: It's the story of a low-rent super-villain, the hero who keeps beating him up, and the cute girl from the laundromat he's too shy to talk to. And I'm having the time of my life.

Neil Patrick Harris…..as Dr. Horrible
Nathan Fillion……….as Captain Hammer
Felicia Day………….as Penny

And a cast of Dozens!

Coming soon.

Wonder Woman suddenly less wonderful

Joss Whedon, creator of "Buffy" and "Angel" and "Firefly," just announced that after months of work on the upcoming "Wonder Woman" movie he and the studio have parted ways.

"It's pretty complicated, so bear with me. I had a take on the film that, well, nobody liked. Hey, not that complicated."

Turns out his plans for the Amazonian were different from the studio's, and they moved on. It happens, no worries. Me, I'm relieved.

I was seriously worried sick that "Wonder Woman" wasn't going to be a mindless action shoot-em-up movie with a ludicriously implausible plot and a hip hop soundtrack, starring an actress hired for her breast size, bankability, and willingness to pose for Playboy as a promotional tie-in.

I mean, c'mon. Whedon is known for his "feminist" views and his insistence on "quality" and "acting," and they wanted him to write a big budget movie about a powerful, intelligent woman of nobility, strength, and independence? What dream world were they living in?

Why we love the Firefly/Serenity crew

Updated… See, last year a group called Booster Events held this massive Firefly/Serenity convention in California last year called "Flanvention." A lot of the cast shows up, there were panels and dinners and photo shoots and whatnot, membership was limited, and it was a lot of fun, a way for fans of the cancelled-too-soon show and because-we-demanded-it movie to talk to their favorite stars. This year's hotly anticipated event sold out months ago and it's happening this weekend, right now.

Or it would be. The organizers cancelled it. On Thursday.

There were some worries this would happen, after Nathan ("Mal") Fillion idly mentioned on his MySpace page a few weeks ago that he had yet to hear from the organizers about it. There was a brief outcry from fans, things were seemingly cleared up, all was shakily well. Then about two weeks ago the organizers announced the con might not go on due to financial difficulties. To the 500 people who paid hundreds of dollars for tickets (and, in some cases, thousands of dollars for lifetime memberships, since Booster Events does other cons throughout the year for other cult-favorite franchises) this was a huge slap in the face. Outraged fans made their voices heard before the organizers came back a few days later to say they got a loan and all was, again, well.

Then they cancelled it this week, after people around the world were already on their planes and in their cars and on their way. To say that the Firefly fan community (known as Browncoats) was staggered would be an understatement.

As stunned and betrayed fans began to arrive the California Browncoats jumped up to meet the frantic challenge of organizing a convention during, you know, the actual convention. Fans settled in to party among themselves anyway, mutter dark things about Booster Events, and make the best of it of the newly formed Browncoat Backup Bash.

Then the stars started showing up.

A review of the earlier, longer Serenity script

Bought a copy of the early, 190-page script of Serenity that Joss wrote and then cut down bigtime to fit into the time and budget. Lots of changes were made, a lot of great dialogue cut (although some of the best lines were added in later versions) and in this version everybody lives.

Posted a long recap, with excerpts, here.

While I love the movie, there's a lot of stuff here I'd have loved to seen included.

MAL
One of you has the code to that
vault. You might make yourself
known at this point.

No one moves.

MAL
(continuing)
Okay, there's a couple of things
I'd like to make clear. First, we
don't want to hurt anybody. Second,
my large friend over here really
does wanna hurt somebody. He
kinda craves violence.

JAYNE
It's a flaw in my character.

MAL
It is a little disturbing. So I
strongly suggest the trade agent
make themselves known now, or my
boy'll be picking victims at random.

JAYNE
I'd like to mention I also hit women.

MAL
Good point, let's factor that in.

Happy Serenity Day!

Serenity (Widescreen Edition)Today's the day when the manic folks at www.serenityday.org are urging Browncoats everywhere to pick up another copy of Serenity to cause a spike in sales, thereby reminding the good folks at Universal that we're still out here and we still have cash to blow.

To make things easier, Amazon currently has it on sale for $11.88, so you have no excuse. And it's Joss' birthday today, and you know you didn't remember to get him anything…

If the widescreen DVD doesn't work for you, I've got links to more formats here.

Saw "Serenity" last night

Wow.

Just… wow.

Went back to the friend's house we were staying at — had to go across the state to the screening — and stayed up til 3 talking about it, laughing and sniffling and arguing.

Can't give particulars without revealing suprises you really don't want revealed. I can say that everyone's back, everyone gets a chance to shine, and that this was the most emotional, heart-breaking, exciting, dramatic, and damn funny movies I've ever seen.

If you want to ruin it for yourself, I'm posting a review-of-sorts on the "I've Seen Serenity" spoilerific forum at the movie website. But don't read it.

Serenity advanced screening: I hate you all

Serenity: Can't Stop the Signal

Advanced screenings of the Firefly movie Serenity will be shown in 10 cities in 10 states on Thursday, May 5. Information on ticket sales is here.

If you can watch the trailer released yesterday and not want to see this, I wonder about you. Really. Seek help.

In the meantime, since Florida is not one of the 10 states — rackin' frackin' son of a… — please be aware that if you live near one of these theaters, I hate you. Each and every one of you. I'll be whiling away my time on the offical movie site, drowning my sorrows with the other geographically challenged browncoats.

Serenity trailer!

…almost. But it'll be here Tuesday! From the official Serenity site:

Hey guys.

I'm here on the official site, so that can only mean one thing: somebody finally told me my password! (Again.) It probably also means that I have some big-ass announcement or other. Well tops on the announcement list is this: after months of intensive yoga, i can finally touch my toes! (They feel round and bunion-y.)

But there's more! I'm talkin' movie news, peeps, so no more drumroll: Trailer. Serenity. Tuesday.

Yeah, kids, the haps is hap'nin', and it runs thus: EXCLUSIVELY on Apple movie trailers (and linked through this site as well of course) will be a small, medium, large or FULLSCREEN trailer for Serenity the major motion movie. Yeah, THE trailer. And the following Friday said trailer hits theaters. Which theaters? Until I get confirmation you'll have to guess, but I'm betting you can.

Now, here's a word of warning: this trailer ain't shy. If you're looking to live totally spoiler-free, know that there's plenty of key dialogue and images running through this bad boy. It's pretty tasty, though, and it doesn't give everything away. But close scrutiny will definitely learn you much of what's to come. (Anakin TOTALLY goes evil.) It's a nice piece to while away the time till September, and hopefully should intrigue th' peeps that don't have coats of brown.

The only thing more exciting than y'all finally seeing this was showing it to Nathan. Like a schoolboy giggled he.

Bye-ee!

Joss "You can't take my toes from me" Whedon.

Life is good.

I don’t care, I’m still free, you can’t take this book from me

Finding Serenity, edited by Jane Espenson

Haven't started reading it yet, just now got it. But I can give you the back cover description.

"Firefly's early demise left fans with a deep sense of loss and plenty of unanswered questions. From what was wrong with the pilot to what was right with the Reavers, from the use of Chinese to how correspondence between Joss and network executives might have gone, from a philosopher's pespective on 'Objects in Space' to a sex therapist's analysis of Inara, 'Finding Serenity' is filled with writing as exciting, funny, and enthralling as the the show itself."

240 pages, Benbella Books. $17.95, currently $12.21 at Amazon.

I'll be in my bunk…

I'm Twittering!
